Current role and experience

As a founding director of the business and a former army officer, I have over 40 years’ experience in risk and insurance. I previously held senior leadership roles in industry, at global insurance brokers Marsh and Willis, before serving on the board of a regional insurance broker prior to establishing Sentio.

With an MBA from a leading British Business School, I have supported plc and owner-managed companies, contributing to their growth and directly implementing risk and insurance programmes to mitigate their risks and improve their risk profiles. I am passionate about the Sentio business and supporting our clients and my own staff, something which I feel many of the larger consolidator brokers have now lost the personal touch for.

Family

I am a family man with a lovely and patient (!) wife Deborah and three boys, although only one has followed me into the insurance sector, working down in Lloyds of London. We also have two dogs which keep us busy.

Activities out of work

Out of the office, I remain very active and enjoy running, skiing, hill walking, and anything on or around water. In 2024, I ran the Barcelona marathon in less than 4 hours (a painful experience) and previously led a team from Sentio successfully completing the 3 peaks challenge within 24 hours. Having completed the challenge now four times, I have said I will NOT make it five!

Favourite Sports Team

The Wolves. My uncle took me to watch them as a boy and whilst my family all support Manchester United (having never been t Manchester!) , I have remained loyal to my childhood team.

If you were a drink, what would it be?

With an eclectic taste, it really depends on the time of the day. Champagne, wine, gin, and a good ale are all favourites. However, let’s say a 12+ year Single Malt Whiskey—it improves with age, is smooth, easy to get on with, and sophisticated in taste. However, it can still give a kick!

Person whom you most admire

Someone many people may not have heard of – Nando Parrado. "Nando" is one of the sixteen Uruguayan survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972. Stranded and without hope of rescue, he and Roberto Canessa climbed a 4,650-metre (15,260 ft) mountain peak without gear and hiked for 10 days into Chile to seek help, travelling 38 miles. He never gave up, showing enormous resilience and was incredibly determined to save his friends.
